Domestic Relations Practicum

Prerequisites: 42-Hour Domestic Relations Training

This two day course substitutes for the 5 observations or 1 observation and 2 co-mediations required for registration as a Domestic Relations mediator with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution. This course will include mediation observation and coached role plays with Dr. Susan Raines and a panel of expert mediators. Prerequisites: The 42-hour Domestic Relations training must be completed. Trainees seeking to become register domestic relations mediators with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution (GODR) must have completed the General Civil Mediation requirements and have a 4-year college degree. Mediators have 18 months after training to become registered by GODR as a domestic relations mediator or this (and all GODR-approved training) expires. 12 hours of Continuing Legal Education is available at a cost.


Susan Raines, Ph.D., Professor of Conflict Management

While her primary fields of interest include international, environmental and public policy conflicts, Professor Raines is interested in conflict management at all levels. She regularly mediates commercial and domestic relations court-connected cases, facilitates public meetings, facilitates long-term governmental decision-making processes, and designs conflict management interventions for corporate enterprises. In 2007 she was appointed Editor-in Chief of Conflict Resolution Quarterly. Professor Raines frequently presents her work at both national and international conferences and in a variety of academic and practitioner journals. In addition to her academic pursuits, she has designed ADR programs for numerous state agencies in Indiana, trained managers with the United Nations and arbitrators with the European Union, trained judges and attorneys inside and outside of Georgia, evaluated Florida’s mediation training requirements, and has participated in the evaluation of the United States Postal Service’s REDRESS Program. Currently, she is writing two books: One on “Conflict Management for Managers” and one related to “Benchmarking Mediation” (with Jean Poitras).
